The Emakoko

The Emakoko

Nairobi’s most personal, peaceful welcome to the wilderness

The Emakoko

Tucked into the southern boundary of Nairobi National Park, The Emakoko is a boutique lodge with just ten rooms and a private house, owned and hosted by Emma and Anthony Childs. It’s the perfect place to begin or end a safari, surrounded by wildlife yet just 40-45 minutes from both JKIA and Wilson Airport, and close to Nairobi’s key attractions - the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage, the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum. Guests enjoy game drives in the park, home to four of the Big Five and a thriving black rhino population, as well as easy access to local art galleries, shops, and cafes in Karen and Langata.

Accommodation
Lodge Rooms

The Emakoko’s ten spacious cottage-style rooms are designed with comfort and practicality in mind, an ideal Nairobi base for guests arriving in Kenya or preparing to head home. With plenty of space to unpack and repack, they offer a calm, comfortable base at either end of a safari. Each cottage can be set up as a double or twin and includes a generous bathroom with a deep bathtub and separate shower for unhurried relaxation. Private verandas provide peaceful outdoor space, while two interconnected cottages suit families or friends. Five cottages sit on the lower level and five on the upper ridge, accessed via the funicular.

The Private House

The Emakoko's Private House is built on the clifftop above the lodge and offers an exclusive and personal space with spectacular views across Nairobi National Park. Accessed from the main area below by the Funicular. the house has two en-suite bedrooms, an open plan sitting and dining room and a private swimming pool. The house has a kitchen and dedicated chef who can prepare private meals or if preferred, guests can enjoy their meals in the dining room of the main lodge. The House has a private helicopter pad behind the house offering an extra level of convenience.

The Funicular

Designed by Anton, the funicular allows convenient access to the cliff top rooms and the Private House from the Main Area below. The more actively inclined are welcome to try their luck at beating the funicular up the steep steps running along side if they dare!

Main Area

After crossing a wooden bridge over the Mbagathi River, guests step into the relaxed, open spaces of The Emakoko. Facing Nairobi National Park, the lodge offers wildlife views from the sitting room, dining room, and the cottages themselves.

The main building has cosy indoor spaces with fireplaces, while below it a newly renovated infinity pool, with its own bar and pizza oven, creates the perfect place to unwind. The Emakoko is also known for its exceptional food, adding another layer of comfort and delight to the ideal first or last night on safari.

“Our first trip to Kenya, our first stop was Emakoko. So close to Nairobi city, but worlds away. We spotted both species of rhino on our first game drive, the staff are wonderful and our guide Samuel was so knowledgeable and helpful. We loved it so much we booked another night at the end of our trip.”

Trip Advisor Review, The Emakoko

The Childs Family

Anthony and Emma Childs are the husband-and-wife team behind The Emakoko, each bringing a very different, yet perfectly complementary, set of talents to the lodge. Anthony was born in the UK and arrived in Kenya at just five months old. After a brief return to the UK for a rugby career thinly disguised as university, he moved back to Kenya and has since spent his life guiding, managing lodges and exploring every corner of East Africa.

His lifelong passion for reptiles and close friendship with herpetologist Royjan Taylor led to decades of fieldwork with Bio-Ken and the Taylor Ashe Foundation. Together they travelled across Kenya collecting thousands of snakes for life saving anti-venom research at Bio-Ken in Watamu, which now houses the most extensive collection of African snakes anywhere. During one coastal expedition, they encountered a cobra they immediately recognised as unusual; years later they formally described it and named it after their mentor, James Ashe. Today, the Ashe’s Spitting Cobra remains the largest spitting cobra in the world. More recently, Anthony has turned part of his attention to scorpions and played a key role in identifying a newly described species, now officially named Gint childsi (Child’s Scorpion). He continues to work closely with Bio-Ken and the Taylor Ashe Foundation and is often spotted dashing off to relocate an unwelcome slithery visitor from a neighboring community home.

Emma was born and raised in Kenya and studied criminology at the University of Pretoria. While the job market in Kenya never quite embraced an aspiring criminologist, the skillset has proved invaluable in every other facet of her life, especially running a lodge. There’s a reason the sign outside the office asks: “Do you want to speak to the man in charge or the woman who knows what’s going on?” After returning home, she began her career with The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust before moving into lodge management with Anthony. The two famously met at a picnic site in Nairobi National Park, unbeknownst by them at the time directly opposite where The Emakoko would later be built.

Married in 2006, Anthony and Emma created The Emakoko as a home base for their family- William, Netty and Alexandra (affectionately known as the Boss Lady)- and as a place that reflects their deep love for Nairobi National Park and the surrounding community. Anthony is usually out front hosting guests along with manager Rihaz, while Emma quietly runs a tight ship behind the scenes, though she reliably appears at exactly the same time as The Emakoko’s famous 'dawa' cocktails.

“It is such an assault on your senses coming to a place like Kenya because it isn’t just wildlife, it isn’t just the dust, it’s the culture, it’s the topography, it’s the starry nights, it’s the skies. There is nowhere in the world like it. We are a home away from home, that’s the whole point of us."
